SREMETRICSGOLDEN SIGNALSOBSERVABILITY

Engineering metrics the CTO can show the board.

A public SaaS CTO needed engineering health metrics for board reporting — beyond DORA. We assembled a comprehensive site-reliability metric set covering golden signals, error-budget burn, deploy quality, on-call load, and platform reliability into a single quarterly report.

HOW IT WENT

The CTO had been spending three days a quarter assembling the engineering health report from screenshots, spreadsheets, and PagerDuty exports. The board appreciated the report; the CTO did not appreciate the process. We took on the assembly.

A Lambda ETL pulled from CloudWatch, PagerDuty, GitHub Actions, and the internal SLO service. It normalised everything into a quarterly time series in DynamoDB; QuickSight rendered the board report directly. Metrics covered golden signals, error-budget burn by service, deploy quality, on-call load, and platform-team reliability.

Report generation dropped from three engineer-days to under an hour. The board now sees the same 14 metrics consistently every quarter, with year-over-year deltas. The CTO’s report-outs got easier — same data, much faster.
